<p>While the Better Business Bureau did not give us a ringing endorsement, they did not question the legality of our service.</p>
<p>According to BBB in their interview about CareerExcuse.com, their main argument is that misleading information on a employment application is grounds for dismissal.   Well, maybe the BBB would be surprised to learn that in a recent study by resume checker <a href="http://http://www.hireright.com/Blog/post/Top-Five-Candidate-Lies.aspx">HireRight</a> shows that:<em> </em></p>
<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Eighty percent of all resumes are misleading, 20 percent state fraudulent&#8221;</em></p></blockquote>
<p><strong>Reported problems with resumes:</strong></p>
<p>Misleading information 80 percent, fraudulent degrees 20 percent, Altered employment dates 30 percent, Inflated salary claims 40 percent, Inaccurate job descriptions 30 percent, Companies no longer exist 25 percent, Falsified references 27 percent.</p>
<p><strong>Bottom Line:</strong></p>
<p>It appears most new hires today are just as likely to be fired for &#8220;lying on their resume&#8221; as anybody else who uses a professional job reference service. The key is to exceed your new employer&#8217;s expectations with your job performance and become a valuable asset to the organization.  Failure to do such, or to perform poorly for your new employer will only invite them to look for excuses to fire you.</p>
<p>Be sure to check the laws in your state and local area.</p>

<p><em>Surprisingly, the legal framework of CareerExcuse’s business is solid- except for their fake diploma offerings. According to law, falsifying information on a resume is not illegal unless you’re lying about your educational credentials.</em></p>
<p><em>Falsifying your work experience could, however, almost certainly get you fired, not to mention the fact that your lack of experience might lead to incompetence at a new job that would be telling and risky in and of itself.</em></p>
<p><em>The study concludes that it is illegal to commit résumé fraud only if the job seeker (1) is claiming an educational credential from a “diploma mill,” a bogus institution and (2) is using the résumé in a state that has enacted legislation to discourage the activities of these schools. However, an employer may be within its legal rights to terminate an employment relationship based upon misrepresentation of qualifications, depending upon the state and the nature of the falsification.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>In another online article,  a <em>study</em> by <em>resume</em> checker HireRight that shows: &#8220;Eighty <em>percent</em> of all <em>resumes</em> are misleading, 20 <em>percent</em> state fraudulent</p>

<p>- 22% said they used the sites to do applicant-background checks, up from 11% a year ago.<br />
- 34% of those who used the sites said they found something that immediately led to disqualifying the applicant as a viable candidate.<br />
- 41% who disqualified candidates said they were motivated to do so because of profile info about drinking or drug use; 40% said they nixed candidates because of inappropriate photos.<br />
- Another 9% said they didn’t do research on social-networking sites but planned to do so in the near future.<br />
On the plus side, 24% said they found info that improved the candidate’s chances of getting hired — such as qualifications, good communication skills or imaginative use of social networking.</p>
<p><strong>BOTTOM LINE</strong></p>
<p>If you are job hunting, examine your profile at social networks and be careful what you are posting.  It will not be difficult for a HR rep to contact one of your friends on a social network.   Examine what your friends are posting.  If a friend posts about the great parties you are throwing, it may not go over well with HR.</p>
<p>What you can do is delete your account, and create a new profile tailored to appeal to potential employers.</p>
<p>You can also make your social networks private so only your approved friends have access.</p>

<p>We have been asked many times  &#8220;anyone call about my references&#8221;?  Since CareerExcuse only notifies you if somebody contacts us in regards to your references,  sometimes you may wonder why nobody is calling to inquire about your references?  Keep in mind, many employers will not check your references until they have most likely already decided to hire you.</p>
<p>A CareerExcuse client informed me how he easily sent out over 100 resumes, done two interviews a week for a month.   One  interview went so well, he received a phone call the next day to ask a few more questions and was  told they were going to check on a few references.   So when a couple days went by, he called CareerExcuse wondering why nobody is calling.   Of course we had no answer except as soon as someone does call, we will contact you.</p>
<p>The next day, our CareerExcuse client notified us how he  just got hired by the same company who said they were checking his references!  He asked if they ever called to verify the his references.  The answer is <strong>no</strong>.  But, since we answer any inquires up to a year, we got you covered if they ever do call to check!</p>
<p>The point is..  You can go through a entire job interview process, get hired, and never have your references checked.  I read on LinkedIN where one manager said when he checks references, he only calls the phone number to see if the reference is real.</p>
<p>Here is what to expect.  If you just finished a great interview, and feel you have a great opportunity in landing that job, there is also ten other people who left their interview feeling the same way.  It boils down to a one out of  ten chance they will call to inquirer about your references.  That doesn&#8217;t mean your not getting the job as they could hire you the next day.   But when they do call inquiring about your references, the job is basically already yours.</p>
<p>At careerExcuse.com, when we notify our clients  that a inquiry was made into their references, almost 9 out of 10 reply back by the next day they were offered the job.</p>

Feel Like Your The Only One With Bad References? If you have bad references from quitting your job or getting yourself fired, don&#8217;t worry, you are not alone.  20 million employees have either been fired, or quit a job under bad terms in the last 10 years according to a 2008 report from the U.S dept. of Labor.</p>
